Which external editors would you like to see supported?
I think you might consider just implementing an export to external editor by allowing the user to navigate to the executable for their editor of choice in such a way that you just open that executable with a %1 for the filename. That way, you don't have to worry about specific editors, just trust the user to know what they're doing? On the assumption that the edited file gets dropped back into a folder you're already watching for updates in a format you're already capable of reading, much could be done with minimal work for you.
Thank you for suggesting the custom path option. It sounds like a reasonable feature to include. To make the user experience even better, I'm considering looking for popular photo editing software in their default installation paths and adding them as export options. For example, if the app detects that Photoshop or Affinity Photo is installed, we could automatically include them in the list of available editors. To ensure we don't miss any software, we'll also support user-defined paths.
Regarding the "Open in external editor" feature, I think it would be a good fit for the planned share menu. This way, users can easily access the option to edit their photos in their preferred editor. What do you think?
Thank you again for your suggestion.
I was going to suggest Photoshop and Affinity but then wondered if a more generalised approach might be better. However, if you can do both I guess that covers all bases!
You might also consider allowing the optional association (within the application) of specific files with specific editors, either by type (RAW files might always be opened with Affinity, for instance) or by tag, perhaps (photo A is going to be associated with editor B but photo C is going to be better off with editor D, but photo E I don't intend to make a decision about just yet or maybe at all.)
Wow, I think that's an excellent idea! Thank you very much!
@parsonstim, the task is complete and it will be available in the upcoming update scheduled for tomorrow. You will be able to access it from the share menu.
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We look forward to hearing your thoughts.
